There are trips you plan for months, and then there are simple family invitations that unexpectedly turn into memorable adventures. What started as a casual visit to my brother in the city became a surprisingly fun, budget-friendly, and heartwarming day filled with good food, scenic views, discounts, and even a peaceful chapel visit.
A Simple Morning That Started the Adventure
Earlier today, my father invited me to visit my brother in the city. Excited about the trip, I immediately got ready and dressed up for the day ahead.
Our journey began when our neighbor kindly brought us to the national road using his tricycle. The fare cost us ₱70. Before heading to the city, we stopped by the public market to buy some fruits—apples worth ₱25 each and six pieces of nearly ripe bananas. One thing I always notice is how much cheaper fruits are in our town compared to the city.
After our quick market stop, we rode a bus bound for Cubao from in front of Olivarez Plaza in Los BaƱos. Thankfully, the trip was smooth and comfortable. We were able to get seats easily, and there was barely any traffic that morning. Each bus ticket cost ₱122, which felt reasonable considering the convenience of the trip.
Staying in the Heart of the City
We arrived at the condominium unit my brother is currently renting. Although the unit was a bit small, its location made up for it. It sits conveniently along the main road where buses going to Cubao regularly pass.
What surprised me most was how practical the area was. The building itself already had an Alfamart and a Korean restaurant on the ground floor. My father bought turon and soft drinks at alfamart. Nearby, within walking distance, were familiar establishments like Jollibee, Chowking, and Starbucks. Everything seemed accessible, making city living feel efficient and convenient despite the limited space.
First Impressions of McKinley Hill and Venice Grand Canal Mall
One of the highlights of the trip was finally visiting McKinley Hill for the first time. To get there, we booked a Grab car going to Venice Grand Canal Mall.
The moment I arrived, I immediately understood why so many people love the place. The colorful buildings, canal-inspired scenery, and charming atmosphere made it feel like stepping into a different country. It was clearly inspired by Venice, Italy, and although it may not be the real thing, it still created a unique and relaxing experience.
I spent some time taking photos of the beautiful surroundings. Everywhere I looked, there seemed to be another picture-perfect spot.
A Japanese Food Experience Worth the Visit
After exploring the mall, we eventually found a Japanese restaurant called Botejyu. The restaurant immediately caught our attention, and thankfully, the food did not disappoint.
We ordered:Takoyaki
Ramen
Okosoba
Teriyaki chicken don
Matcha gelato
Everything tasted satisfying, especially after all the walking we had done around the mall.
What made the dining experience even better was discovering Grab Dine Out deals. Because of the promo, we saved almost ₱400 through a 20% discount on a minimum purchase of ₱1,000. Honestly, the discount felt like a hidden travel hack that made the experience even more rewarding.
Unexpected Entertainment Around the Mall
Before and after dining, we noticed several mall performers roaming around in mascot costumes, including characters like Patrick Star and Sonic the Hedgehog. They added a lively and playful atmosphere to the area.
Unfortunately, I was unable to take photos of them, which I honestly regret because they made the visit feel even more festive and memorable.
A Peaceful Chapel Visit That Made the Trip Meaningful
After eating, my brother mentioned that there was a chapel nearby, so we decided to visit together.
Inside the chapel, we prayed quietly and lit candles. I remembered hearing a belief that if it is your first time visiting a church or chapel, your first prayer there may be answered sooner. Whether true or not, the experience still felt comforting and peaceful.
I was especially amazed to discover that the chapel was dedicated to Saint Raphael the Archangel, known as the patron of healing and the sick. Somehow, the visit gave the entire trip a deeper and more meaningful ending.
The Journey Home
After visiting the chapel, we walked back to my brother’s unit before starting our trip home.
From there:
We rode a jeepney to Market! Market! for ₱13 each.
Then we boarded a bus bound for Alabang Terminal for ₱46 each. From Alabang, we rode another bus going to Sta. Cruz for ₱79 each to return to Los BaƱos.
Finally, we took a tricycle home for ₱80.
Although the day involved several rides and transfers, the overall trip still felt smooth, affordable, and enjoyable.
Final Thoughts: A Day Trip That Felt Bigger Than Expected
What I thought would only be a simple visit to my brother unexpectedly turned into a full city adventure filled with scenic spots, delicious food, family bonding, budget discoveries, and quiet moments of reflection.
From riding tricycles and buses to walking beside Venice-inspired canals, the experience reminded me that meaningful travel does not always require expensive flights or luxurious vacations. Sometimes, a single day with family, good food, and new places is already enough to create lasting memories.
