Part 1. Reading: Sing with the Use of Karaoke Machines!
Introduction: Music and Karaoke
Music plays an important role in our daily lives. It is a huge industry that has been around for many years. People enjoy listening to different genres of music, while others love singing their favorite songs.
Because of this, karaoke machines were invented. They allow people to sing along with recorded music while reading the lyrics displayed on a screen. Karaoke has become a popular form of entertainment in many countries, especially in the Philippines.
In the Philippines, karaoke machines are almost everywhere! You can find them in homes, restaurants, resorts, and entertainment establishments. Generally, there are three popular types of karaoke machines.
1. Videoke Machines
The first type is what Filipinos commonly call a videoke machine. It usually consists of a large television, a karaoke player with several buttons, speakers, and microphones. The player is connected to the television, where the song lyrics and music videos are displayed.
It also comes with a songbook, which is usually a clearbook containing printed song lists. Based on my experience, some of the songbooks I have used were not in good condition. Some even smelled like alcoholic drinks!
This is understandable because many people enjoy drinking beer or other beverages and eating pulutan (Filipino food or snacks commonly enjoyed while drinking) during karaoke sessions.
Despite these little inconveniences, people still have fun singing their favorite songs, sometimes throughout the entire night!
You can usually find these large machines in resorts, restaurants, and even your neighbors' houses during special occasions. In fact, while I am writing this article, I can hear people singing loudly using a videoke machine. Perhaps someone is celebrating a birthday today!
2. Portable Karaoke Microphones
The second type is a portable karaoke microphone. I bought one in 2005, and it contained more than 2,000 songs!
You could add more songs by purchasing song chips. The device could accommodate up to four chips at a time.
Although it was small and lightweight, it had several interesting features, including a scoring system that rated your singing performance.
One of its most interesting features allowed you to listen to someone singing through an FM radio. You simply had to select the correct radio frequency. I was not sure how far the signal could reach, but I tried this unusual feature a few times just for fun!
It was a convenient device because you could bring it almost anywhere without needing a large television or complicated equipment.
3. Karaoke Boxes
The third type is the modern karaoke system commonly found in karaoke boxes or private karaoke rooms.
There are many karaoke establishments in cities, although only a few may be available in smaller towns. These establishments usually charge customers by the hour.
Although they are more expensive than other karaoke options, you pay for comfort and privacy.
Most karaoke rooms are soundproofed and equipped with air conditioning, comfortable seats, and attractive lighting. Customers can also order food and drinks and have them delivered directly to their rooms.
However, if you bring food or drinks from outside establishments, you should check whether the karaoke place charges a corkage fee.
Personally, I like almost everything about karaoke boxes except for their prices!
One of their biggest advantages is their updated song collections. Many establishments use international karaoke systems, allowing customers to sing songs from different countries.
These places are especially enjoyable for people who love K-pop, J-pop, anime theme songs, and international music.
Conclusion: Karaoke Brings People Together
Karaoke is more than just singing. It is a fun activity that brings friends and families together. Whether you prefer a traditional videoke machine, a portable karaoke microphone, or a modern private karaoke room, there is always an option for everyone.
You do not need to be a professional singer to enjoy karaoke. All you need is your favorite song, a microphone, and the confidence to sing!
